When I was a kid sent out on the streets w/a handful of pamphlets to do this kind of thing, I was told something along the lines of: sure it's embarrassing, but what is that next to saving a soul from eternal torment in hell? At bottom, I think some similar psychological engine powers most of these activities, when done sincerely. Many evangelicals feel an honest and powerful responsibility to keep the people they know from roasting over coals eternally or whatever. I think our religious discourse should examine some of these ideas and ask: is it possible to debunk, rewrite, or at least examine our idea of hell? Maybe let these guys off the hook, psychologically?
